Exception management: the freight workflow most teams under-design

Transportation exceptions are inevitable. The difference is whether the response is improvised or designed.

Define what counts as an exception

Create clear triggers for late pickup, late delivery, tracking loss, appointment risk, damaged freight and other events that require action.

Assign ownership immediately

Every exception should have one accountable owner and a next action. Shared awareness is not the same as ownership.

Close the loop

After the shipment is complete, capture root cause and recurrence. Exception data is one of the richest sources for continuous improvement.
